What’s the difference between a telemarketing position and a sales position?

Can you answer Mr. Main Event’s question about Leads?:

I used to be in sales, and I know the gig pretty well. My question is: Is sales the same as telemarketing?

I know that sales is high-pressure and intensive because you have to meet a quota every single quarter (and most of your money is made in commissions). If you don’t meet the quota for a few consecutive quarters, then you’ll be let go. Is telemarketing the same? Are there quotas involved with telemarketing? Will you be let go if you don’t meet those quotas? How is most of your money made: base salary or commissions?

    That’s Telemarketing.

    Feedback: They are both sales jobs. Telemarketers are fresh off the street from high school, alot of times.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE is what you want. People call YOU, YOU answer the questions,and YOU make the $$. No cold calls.

    Also, telemarketers are commission only. Expect alot of hangups.

    Feedback: In telemarketing you annoy most of the people you call and get hateful responses. This is why the FCC created the no call list. If you like taking abuse, this would be a good career move.

    Feedback: I was a telemarketer. Yes, you have to meet quotas and you will be let go if you fail to meet them. Where I worked the quotas were daily and it was very high pressure. I made $8 an hour plus a commission. Most people you call aren’t as rude to you as you might expect, but still I’d prefer a sales job where I could talk to people face to face versus sitting in my cubicle all day long.
