What is the best way to prioritize my mailing lists?

Answered By Editor

Your company should have multiple mailing lists for targeting and sending out different messages. One of the best ways to prioritize your mailing lists is to separate them by value... Customer value. Here are four ways to divide your lists according to customer value:

* Customers

Your list of current customers contains your most valuable names. They have already bought your products or used your services. They are the people or companies most likely to respond again to your future offers.

* Inquiries

These are businesses or individuals who have sought out your company or website and have taken some kind of action. Either they have contacted your organization to request a catalog or sample, or they have requested a quote or some other kind of information. These are also more likely to respond to your offers than others who have not taken an action, especially when contacted immediately after the action taken. You further have reason to believe these people have the ability to pay for your product or service.

* Prospects

Prospects are potential customers. They are people who may have given you their email address and/or zip code. Or, they may be people who have not yet responded to your offers, but you have reason to believe they may have a need for or interest in your product or service. They most likely have the ability to pay for your product or service.

* Potentials

Potentials are those who may have some potential to become customers in the future, but their need for your product or service is uncertain. They may or may not have the ability to pay for your product or service at this time. Developing a mailing list of potential names should be a lower priority of all your mailing lists.
