List Building - Why Your Index Should Be A Lead Capture Page II

By Sean Ray

Compel them to fill in that opt-in form and give you their email address and at least their first name. Don't ask for more or they might become suspicious. No one minds being asked their first name, but if you push and request their family name and even address and phone number, you will likely lose them.

When you lose a visitor, you lose it forever. That is one more person in the world unlikely to visit your site again, so do your best to stop it from happening. Another reason why you should use your index page is that you catch them right away with a teasing offer that might force them to act.

Don't give them time to think by browsing through your site. They might get bored and leave. Instead, make them an offer right there on your home page. It should be the first thing they see, and that is frequently sufficient to capture their address. Don't ask them to register or subscribe since they will think you are trying to catch them. They don't want to be 'caught', but they might want to find out more information. That's what you can offer them. More information.

Make sure that your offer is good enough to attract them. Offer them a free trial of something or a white paper, or even to the opportunity to click for more information. It's not always necessary to put the form on the squeeze page. Yes, you heard right. You don't need to put the form on the squeeze page, so it looks less like a squeeze page, just a normal home page offering you more information and a surprise for you if you click on this link: "Yes, surprise me please!"
