Can Buying Leads Work For Your Business?

By Allen Williams

First off, I\'ve seen this question a lot, and frankly there may be a fundamental flaw here. What one person considers leads another considers subscribers and yet another thinks of as prospects.

The short answer is "yes".

The shorter answer is "no".

But the more likely answer though is "maybe"?

You cannot really "buy leads" as those people are not raising their hands to say they are interested in your particular offer. They have only (maybe, hopefully, supposedly...) raised their hands somewhere, been put on a list, and then turned over to you, and maybe, hopefully, supposedly... not to a dozen, or more others promoting similar and too often the exact same ideas/offers.

Do I sound like I\'m down on this?

Well, I\'m not.

When done properly, it does work, but you cannot expect to just get their names, send them an ad, and wait for the cash to roll in.

That scenario will more likely end with you waiting to get your AR account, or hosting, or both shut down.

Add them to a separate list, or a qualifying list. Give them some good, really good information. Maybe even ask them to join another of your lists (one they have to double-opt in for) in order to get a quality report or bonus.

Then, build your relationship with them by providing them useful, quality, and current information.

Talk to them, not at them.

Then recommend some things to them or include a sponsor ad in your followup. Track it. If it works, do it more. If it doesn\'t, try tweaking your approach. ie more content before an offer, better offer, start with a sponsor ad in the first issue etc. Different lists in different markets often need differing approaches.

"differing" meaning the basics will work in any market, but depending on how jaded or knowledgeable your market is, you have to take that into consideration.

Start small, but with a large enough number to make your results statistically relevant. That is, a small number like a hundred or so isn\'t really going to tell you what might happen over the long haul.

This is something I had never done until the last few months. Bought leads that is. I\'ve had some small success with my small tests in two different markets (neither being IM). One test I started recently brought in about a hundred subscribers right away to a brand new list. Two of those 100 actually wrote me personal notes thanking me for the information I provided in their first issue and asking for more.

So, back to the question, does buying leads work well?

The answer is yes, and no, and maybe, but you can make it work well if you work it, well... well.

Be well,
